This division deals with everything that relates to trees as a factor of land-use management and change.
Urban Development
Most of our tree work is in the urban environment where trees are generally seen as an obstacle to development. Here, our role is to:-
- Resolve disputes in relation to tree issues
- Evaluate existing trees for retention and removal
- Discuss design constraints and opportunities with architects
- Agree tree retention and management plans with Local Planning Authorities (LPA)
- Provide tree and habitat-related landscaping proposals to inform planning decisions
- Assist engineers with construction specifications and services
- Organise pre-build tree work
- Specify and enforce tree protection during construction
- Implement post-build tree care and landscaping works
- Sign off tree issues with client and LPA
Over the last 7 years, we have built up a strong client base among developers, architects, planners, engineers and landscape designers and, being judged by our results, we work mainly on repeat business. We are now also providing expert advice to local LPA planning departments.
Projects vary, but may be categorised into educational expansion, commercial redevelopment and new residential.
Tree Collections
This division deals with the management of tree collections, more often in the suburbs and on the edges of towns where there is more space. Clients tend to be schools, colleges, universities, hotels, prestigious office complexes, arboreta and country estate parks.
For these clients, the trees, individually and collectively, have immense landscape and amenity value, greatly enhancing the working, learning and recreational environment.
Facilities managers are also increasingly aware of the safety issues affecting their estate, not least the potential problems posed by large trees.
Typically, the work may be summarised as follows:
- Tree assessment, numbering and tagging
- Tree mapping (including GPS) and digital, interactive site plan
- Management planning, work programming and budgeting
- Challenging legal constraints such as Tree Preservation Orders
- Appointment and management of contractors
- Project review with client
Tree Reports and Assessments
We are increasingly being asked to prepare one off tree reports to address specific issues, including:
- Risk assessments and safety checks
- Boundary disputes
- Insurance requirements
- Tree health and diseases
- Tree care and management
- Legal restrictions and disputes
- Amenity and commercial valuations
