British and Irish Hardwoods Improvement Programme
This year, Graham Garratt and Karen Russell have been delighted to accept the positions of Chair of the BIHIP Walnut Group and Secretary of the BIHIP Sweet Chestnut Group respectively, further strengthening our commitment to the improvement of hardwoods through breeding and silviculture.
Department of Energy and Climate Change
On behalf of BIHIP Sweet Chestnut Group, Lockhart Garratt secured and managed a project from the Department of Energy and Climate Change to a) complete the collection and propagation of outstanding UK trees, b) assessments of the UK resource, c) summary of chestnut's environmental requirements and ecological characteristics and d) evaluate chestnut's potential as an energy crop and e) provide recommendations for future work. This has been a key achievement for the group and will in time enable the establishment of seed orchards to provide high quality seed to growers.
