Cambridge University [click for website]

"Lockhart Garratt has advised the University since the company was formed in 1998. Their involvement has extended from commercial forestry management of woods under the Forestry Commission Dedication Scheme, Woodland Grant Scheme and Farm Woodland Scheme. There has been a sympathetic management of an ancient woodland SSSI, management of landscape within a Historic Listed landscape, environmental advice in connection with the dredging of a Capability Borwn lake and associated landscaping

The company has also been involved on the Universit's urban estate, preparing tree management plans to assist on day-to-day management and satisfy the local planning authority with regard to future development. They have also provided arboricultural advice on historic and veteren trees.

Throughout this wide spectrum of work, we have always received a professional and efficient service. They have been sympathetic to the various needs of the University whether it is in connection with research, future development or providing value for money."

Hanson Building Products [click for website]

“Hanson Building Products Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hanson Plc, is responsible for the operation of 14 brick production facilities and 15 quarrying operations throughout the UK and now commands approximately one third of the UK brick market.

Working in an environmentally sensitive industry, we take our obligations to minimise the impact of our mineral extraction activities on the landscape very seriously and we take great pride in giving something back to the communities in which we operate.

This is why we employ the services of Lockhart Garratt Ltd, to look after and manage our existing woodlands and hedgerows and to implement landscaping projects, which not only screen our quarry workings from the public eye, but also enhance the long term reclamation of our sites.

Lockhart Garratt’s broad range of expertise and integral knowledge of the rural landscape provides us with an ideal partnership, with whom we have developed a close and trusted working relationship. Lockhart Garratt provide us with detailed and accurate budget accounts of all the landscaping projects they manage for us and their promise to deliver our tailored, long term requirements has been integral to us achieving our long term objectives in providing a valuable afteruse of our sites, not only for the good of the environment, but for the local community as a whole”

Harca Woodlands [click for website]

"In 2000 we appointed LG to overview our woodland properties in Cumbria and Durham some 450 acres. Since planting in the 70's we have carried out basic woodland management. We wanted to improve our long term management of the woodlands, develop our relationship with the Forestry Commission and other local interest groups in the spirit of environmental, landscape and public access issues. LG set out with their appraisal of all the issues which developed into a twenty year plan. As a result we have been able addressed all the issues with full consultation with all relevant interest groups that has allowed us to substantially invest in good public access, general improvements and has set us on a management course that will ensure the continued commercial viability of the woodlands in harmony with public access, improved environmental and landscape matters. LG has enabled us to be partners with the Forestry Commission, the local community and those that visit our woodlands where our woodlands are a living commercial activity and community and environmentally friendly habitat"

John Harca

Oxford Brookes University [click for website]

Mr Ian King, Director of Estates and Facilities Management for Oxford Brookes University, confirmed that "the Marston Road development was a particularly sensitive site. Being located next to a Conservation Area and overlooking the dreaming spires of Oxford, it was essential that a carefully designed and specially landscaped solution was developed for this project." He confirms that Lockhart Garratt not only met his precise brief, but indeed exceeded his expectations for a sympathetic solution.

Through the professional input of Lockhart Garratt we were able to persuade Corby Borough Council of our genuine desire to work with a mature landscape feature and of our commitment to its future management for the benefit of existing and new residents of the area"

Royal Forestry Society [click for website]

“Lockhart Garratt understands and puts into practice, what is required to plan, establish and run woodland with wildlife conservation, landscaping, access and interpretation as integral components. “Over the past 5 years they have managed the planting, establishment and public promotion of Battram Wood. Planting is now thriving, providing a working woodland used by the local community, visitors to the National Forest and society members for walking, picnicing and educational visits involving both family events and technical silvicultural discussions. I look forward to seeing this natural resource grow with the help and input of Battram Village”

St George's Regeneration Company

“The St George’s area is made up of forty acres of virtually derelict former textile mills to the east of Leicester City Centre, and St George’s Regeneration was established to promote the renaissance of the area. At the physical and metaphorical heart of the project is St George’s Churchyard, the largest area of open space in Leicester City Centre. The success of the overall project depends on the successful transformation of the Churchyard from its current overgrown, shaded and rather sinister character, into the an attractive city park providing a focal point to both St George’s and the city as a whole.

Leicester City Council had prepared proposals that were, in our opinion, entirely inappropriate towards the regeneration goal, being inordinately influenced by the Council’s Tree Officer and his determination to retain both density and canopy at all costs. Lockhart Garratt were engaged by us to provide an objective assessment of the tree collection and advise on counter proposals to the Council’s own deficient scheme. Lockhart Garratt’s initial report was thorough, detailed and supported by a meeting to explain and expand on implications as they affected regeneration. Their technical expertise, and detailed knowledge of both Statute and Case Law enabled us to counter the City Council’s proposals, both on the basis of the Report and Recommendations prepared by Lockhart Garratt, and further supported by their ongoing involvement in those negotiations, with further advice on specific issues as they arise.

Negotiations are continuing with the City Council and we are hopeful of achieving a satisfactory outcome in the near future. In the short term however, and with significant input from Lockhart Garratt, we have been able to prevent a scheme that would have been detrimental to the regeneration of this significant area of Leicester"

Chairman

The National Forest Company [click for website]

The National Forest Company's Board of Directors has remarked upon the high standard of the scheme presentation, especially with regard to the GIS mapping that has been used to substantiate the applications. The ability to include unusual tree species, open space and community involvement that all add to the wider value and appeal of the woodland is noted. The work undertaken at Battram Wood to fully engage the support of the local community had been particularly worthy of praise. Indeed this has helped to create a woodland that is valued and considered by the village to be its own wood.
